My father recently had a stroke and we need to lower his sodium intake. I am looking for some tasty low sodium alternatives to classic homestyle recipes. Anyone with personal experience with this type of situation?
Thank you so much.I am looking for low sodium alternatives to classic recipes.?
Study salt. Then study Sea salt. I would never use an artificial salt. It is not healthy for Dad in the long run. Sea salt is chocked full of magnesium and minerals. Morton salt has no value for anything unless it is iodized. Then research Pepper. Their are several different breeds of Pepper.
Herbs:
Asian foods: lemon, ginger, onion, garlic (which he needs for his cholesterol levels), and don't use soy sauce. Use Bragg's Amino sauce. You can find it a your local health food store in the states. I use this in everything as I feel great after eating a meal with this sauce.
Italian: onion, garlic, basil, oregano, parsley.
India spices: turmeric, curry. (turmeric=pain relief)
Mexican: cumin, onion, garlic, red pepper.
Remember, that most people are not satisfied with herbs because they don't use enough. Make sure you use enough to bring out the flavor.
Cranberries help to reduce inflammation. Also research cayenne pepper tablets as they reduce water retention.
Now pat yourself on the back for being such a great daughter.I am looking for low sodium alternatives to classic recipes.?
Don't add salt of any kind. instead to season his food, try Mrs Dash or McCormick seasonings makes a good ';all purpose'; ';salt free seasoning';.
If you have to use salt (for baking) then try the product ';nosalt'; same taste as salt but almost no sodium.
I have really high blood pressure and these are the products my doctor recommends for me to use.
you cook things the same way but omit the salt or use a salt substitute...lots of fresh herbs for flavor....there are low sodium cook books out there but just use your head and watch what products you are adding to your recipes...good luck
I use the Morton Lite Salt Mixture....1/2 the sodium as table salt....makes my recipes come out fine ...others do add salt to my recipes as they prefer more salt taste...took me a week to adjust to the taste
try using mrs.dash low sodium and also, watch the cholesteral intake you can also buy low sodium soups and low sodium veggies in the can as well as low sodium gravy
Use potassium chloride instead of table salt.
